After your CPT is processed, you will receive information on how to apply for an SSN. If you do not have an SSN, you need to apply for CPT at least 4 weeks before your CPT start date. You need to apply for CPT at least 2 weeks before you plan on starting CPT. Please note that starting and applying for CPT are not the same thing. Ĭurrent students: The last day to start CPT is 4 weeks before the end of the semester. New students: The earliest date you can start your employment each semester is on mandatory orientation. You must have received your I20 with CPT authorization and wait until your employment start date to legally start working. We can’t process CPT applications more than 30 days before your employer start date. You must apply two weeks before your employer start date. The whole CPT process can take up to two weeks. Please see the “OPT Eligibility” for more information on OPT. You can apply for part-time (20 hours or less) or full-time (more than 20 hours). You need a job offer letter, be in good academic standing throughout your whole program (3.0 GPA) and be enrolled full-time (6 credits) to work on CPT. CPT employment may not delay completion of the academic program.” CPT is available only prior to the completion of the student degree program and student must have a job offer at the time of application. CPT is defined as employment which is an integral part of an established curriculum, including: “alternate work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.” Source. If a student wishes to accept employment off-campus, the student should pursue Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
Under CPT authorization, students can either work full-time (more than 20 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours or less per week). The practical training should relate directly to the student’s major area of study and is an integral part of the school’s established curriculum with the purpose to help students gain real-life experience that can help on their academic studies.
